What makes it special

The Barreiros lookout was rebuilt and reopened in September 2019, with a cantilevered platform, timber deck, pergola and new lighting (Prefeitura de Ilhabela). It now has parking and the “Amo Ilhabela” sign (Prefeitura de Ilhabela), and facing it is the house of the old Fazenda Barreiro, more than 100 years old (Turismo Ilhabela).
The beach has a lawn with dozens of coconut palms, a long strip of sand and calm water, stays quiet even in high season, and has bus stops, a cycle lane and a parking lane nearby (Prefeitura de Ilhabela). The calm water suits sailing, stand-up paddle, kitesurfing and windsurfing (Turismo Ilhabela).
In November 2025, the city and a local association started a pilot management project on the beach: rustic fencing around the restinga, protection of the jundu dune vegetation, marked paths to the sand and signs with the beach rules, which ban camping, barbecues and pets (Prefeitura de Ilhabela).
In June 2026, the city announced that Sabesp will build in Ilhabela the state's first seawater desalination plant for public supply, adding 20 litres per second to the Água Branca system; Barreiros is among the neighbourhoods it will serve (Prefeitura de Ilhabela).

The slope along Avenida Luís Massa, known as Morro do Barreiros, used to shed rocks and earth in the rain after an irregular cut made to widen the road (Prefeitura de Ilhabela). In February 2017 Civil Defence removed a boulder there at high risk of falling (Prefeitura de Ilhabela), and retaining work with mesh, steel cables and anchors along 500 metres was handed over in September 2017 (Prefeitura de Ilhabela). If the property is on a slope, have the lot assessed.
Cetesb, the state environmental agency, monitors two points on the beach, Barreiros Norte and Barreiros Sul (Cetesb), and Barreiros Sul was rated unfit for swimming in the bulletins of February 2026 and April 2026. Check the weekly bulletin.
There are no kiosks or restaurants near the beach (Prefeitura de Ilhabela).
