What makes it special
- Fishing runs deep here: the pier at the right-hand end is good for fishing, and there is a fishermen's shed and one of the last salgas on the São Paulo coast, where fish used to be salted and dried by hand. In the whaling era, the beach was called Ponta do Rabo Azedo (Turismo Ilhabela).
- In May 2025, the city opened the new Ponta Azeda fishing shed, a long-standing request from the fishermen of Ponta Azeda and Praia do Pinto. It stands on the site of the old salga, expropriated and handed to the community in 2016, which now houses the Centro Cultural da Salga, with cultural workshops and the Festival da Lula (Prefeitura de Ilhabela). The festival's 5th edition, free to enter, was held on 21 and 22 March 2026 (Prefeitura de Ilhabela).
- You can get to the centre by boat: the Ponta Azeda pier joined the Aquabus service in June 2024 (Prefeitura de Ilhabela), which runs every day from 8:10 to 19:00, calling at the Ponta Azeda, Vila, Engenho D'Água, Perequê, ferry and Praia Grande piers, weather permitting (Prefeitura de Ilhabela).
- The UBS Costa Norte serves Armação and other northern neighbourhoods and has medical and dental consulting rooms, vaccination, lab sample collection and a pharmacy (Prefeitura de Ilhabela).
What to weigh
- The beach is tucked behind private properties and is reached by a right-of-way or from the neighbouring beaches (Turismo Ilhabela). From the street you go down a flight of steps, and parking is a little far off (Prefeitura de Ilhabela). Check how the property connects to the street and to the beach.
- Ponta Azeda was on the list of neighbourhoods whose supply was cut overnight during Sabesp work at the Água Branca treatment plant in October 2024, and Sabesp said homes with a 24-hour water tank would not be affected (Prefeitura de Ilhabela). In January 2026, the mayor spoke of seven days in a row without water in the north and took the matter to Arsesp, the state utilities regulator (Prefeitura de Ilhabela). A large water tank is worth having.
- Part of the neighbourhood is a land-regularisation area: in January 2023, the city handed about 15 new property-tax registrations to caiçara residents of the núcleo, for a total of 34 regularised records (Prefeitura de Ilhabela). Check the property's registry record.
